“But the lower classes seem to be in every respect poorer”

* * *

No connection was made between the observations that Brecknock had a high proportion of country houses, and that its peasants were poorer than those in Glamorgan.

With respect to the condition of the common people, it invariably strikes the eye, on entering this county from Glamorganshire, that the appearance of the cottages, and the condition of the cottagers, changes, for the worse. The pride of decorating them, and the comfort of keeping them in repair, seem no longer to enter into the scale of happiness. The gardens and potatoe grounds are not universal, and seem, where they are possessed, not to be very highly valued. Even in the town of Brecknock, the habitations of the labouring poor are in a much worse condition, than streets similarly occupied in the most insignificant town of Glamorganshire, in the vale. Yet Brecknock contains an unusual portion of accommodation for the rich. But the lower classes seem to be in every respect poorer, and to live more hardly. They have no large manufacturing establishments, so that agriculture is the principal object of attention; yet they make a considerable quantity of coarse cloth and stockings in different places. Provisions and labour are not so much advanced as in Glamorganshire, but are much higher than when you advance to the north or west.
